Introduction

Weather affects your life. If it rains too much, a sports game may be cancelled. If it snows, school may be delayed, or canceled.

Can you think of a time when your plans were affected by the weather?

A Doggie Day

Sometimes weather causes a bigger disruption in your life than just missing a sports game or delaying school. The weather may be so strong that you can't go outside for a day, or two days, or even longer. The weather may damage structures structures like homes or school buildings, blow trees over, knock down power lines or flood streets and yards, making it unsafe to go outside. When this happens, it is called a severe weather severe weather event.

Teacher Note

Make sure students understand the meaning of severe weather: very strong or powerful weather. Allow them to verbally share their experiences with a severe weather event or an instance where weather affected their plans.
